Lever Foundation’s 2024 Philippines Restaurant Industry Cage-Free Egg Scorecard reveals that most chain restaurants in the country are now committed to eliminating caged eggs from their supply chains.
Lever’s comprehensive analysis found that 62% of mid-to-large-sized restaurant chains nationwide have established clear timelines for transitioning to cage-free eggs. This represents a major shift in the industry, with these commitments covering nearly 9,000 restaurant locations–approximately two-thirds of all chain restaurant locations across the Philippines. The movement toward cage-free sourcing continues to gain momentum, with six additional brands – representing another 13% of restaurant locations nationwide – announcing they are actively developing similar policies. This brings the total percentage of chain restaurants committed to or working toward cage-free sourcing to 75%.
Leading Brands Creating Change for Hens
Several prominent domestic brands are leading this transformation, including Jollibee, Chowking, Mang Inasal, Red Ribbon, Greenwich, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Highlands Coffee, and several others. International brands operating in the Philippines have also joined the movement, with companies like BreadTalk Philippines, Andok’s, Burger King, and Panda Express making firm commitments to cage-free sourcing.
Consumer Demand for Cage-Free Eggs Driving Industry Shift
This industry-wide shift aligns with growing consumer awareness and demand for more ethical food sourcing. Research by GMO Research in 2024 found that 83% of Filipino consumers believe food businesses should source eggs exclusively from cage-free environments. This consumer sentiment, coupled with government support through initiatives like the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards’ Code of Practice for Cage-free Egg Production, creates a robust foundation for sustainable change in the food service industry.
While progress has been made, there’s still work to be done. Several restaurant brands have yet to make public commitments to cage-free sourcing. However, the current momentum suggests a continued shift toward more humane and sustainable practices is on the menu for the Philippines’ food service industry.
