Strategic cage-free commitments are reshaping Asia-Pacific food systems, with retail chains, hospitality groups, and healthcare institutions implementing systematic sourcing changes across four countries. Over 90 locations have committed to eliminating caged egg sourcing by 2035, representing the most comprehensive cage-free expansion in Asia-Pacific history.

Malaysia’s Food Purveyor has established the region’s most ambitious retail commitment, transitioning 39 stores across five brands, as well as e-commerce channels, to exclusively cage-free sourcing by 2035. With Malaysia consuming approximately 7 billion eggs annually, this single commitment affects supply chains serving millions of consumers nationwide.

Macau’s coordinated retail transformation creates a unified cage-free ecosystem. Sunsco Group’s commitment across all 19 stores by 2035 follows similar pledges from Royal Group and Tai Fung International, eliminating millions of caged hen-hours annually through comprehensive procurement protocols that create immediate demand for cage-free production.

The hospitality momentum is equally strategic. Sunway Hotels & Resorts’ 2030 commitment spans 11 properties with 4,000 rooms across Malaysia, Cambodia, and Vietnam, representing the largest hospitality cage-free pledge in Southeast Asia. Thailand’s Dusit Princess Phatthalung has set an even more aggressive 2026 timeline, demonstrating how established brands are competing on animal welfare credentials.

Healthcare and specialty sectors are also making cage-free commitments. Bangkok’s Vichaiyut Hospital has committed to cage-free sourcing by 2025, while Philippines’ Santis Delicatessen is transitioning across all 12 Metro Manila locations, addressing documented consumer research showing 73% of Filipino urban consumers prefer welfare-certified products.

Cage-free systems reduce hen mortality by up to 40% while allowing natural behaviors impossible in conventional housing. Across committed properties and retail locations, this transition will improve welfare conditions for millions of laying hens annually.
