The Philippines’ hospitality scene just welcomed its first major plant-based dining breakthrough. Ascott Limited Philippines has committed to sourcing plant-based options for 20% of menu items this year, scaling up to 30% by 2027 across all 17 properties nationwide.
In a country where its traditional cuisine centers on meat and seafood, this marks a notable shift in the approach of international hospitality brands to sustainable dining. Ascott operates premium serviced residences and hotels in Manila, Cebu, Bacolod, and other key cities, serving business travelers and tourists who increasingly expect sustainable food options.
The commitment emerged from Lever Foundation’s strategic engagement with the hospitality sector in the Philippines. After months of consultation, Ascott’s leadership recognized the business case for plant-based dining, from reducing environmental impact to meeting evolving guest preferences.
What makes Ascott’s approach particularly smart is how they’re weaving Filipino flavors into plant-based offerings. Their Slow Food Community Linkages program at Citadines Bacolod City already partners with local producers, incorporating unique regional ingredients like Bugnay wild berries and locally-grown cacao. This local sourcing strategy means guests won’t just find generic plant-based options—they’ll discover Filipino-inspired dishes that celebrate the country’s agricultural heritage.
The environmental math behind the commitment is compelling. Plant-based proteins generate up to 90% lower greenhouse gas emissions while requiring significantly less land and water than animal proteins. Across 17 properties serving thousands of guests monthly, these changes add up to meaningful environmental impact.
But here’s the strategic piece that matters most: when a respected international brand like Ascott makes this move, other hospitality operators take notice. The commitment creates new demand for Filipino plant-based suppliers and demonstrates market viability to local competitors considering similar policies.
For Lever Foundation, this marks our first corporate plant-based commitment in the Philippines—a milestone that opens doors for broader industry engagement in one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic markets.
