A recent series of consumer surveys spanning Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Malaysia has made it clear that the demand for ethical eggs is reaching a crescendo. Conducted by GMO Research, a leading APAC consumer research agency with 55 million online panelists across the region, these surveys highlight a profound shift in consumer attitudes towards food sourcing and animal welfare.
Across all three regions, an overwhelming majority of consumers voiced their preference for eggs sourced from cage-free environments. In Hong Kong, a staggering 86% of respondents championed cage-free eggs, while in the Philippines and Malaysia, 83% and 77%, respectively, echoed this sentiment.
The surveys also revealed a resounding call for humane treatment across the entire supply chain, with a significant percentage of respondents advocating for both eggs and meat to be sourced from farms that uphold ethical standards.
A substantial portion of respondents in all three regions expressed readiness to pay a premium for cage-free eggs, citing benefits in food safety and quality. In Hong Kong, 83% of consumers saw the value in cage-free eggs, with 78% willing to pay extra for them. Similarly, in the Philippines and Malaysia, a majority of respondents signaled their support for ethical sourcing, even if it meant digging a little deeper into their pockets.
Consumers are sending a clear message: they want their food choices to align with their values. As awareness and demand for ethical practices, such as the adoption of cage-free eggs, continue to surge, businesses have a golden opportunity to not only meet but exceed consumer expectations. By prioritizing ethical sourcing standards, companies can not only strengthen their brand reputation but also demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and animal welfare that resonates deeply with their customers.
The move towards cage-free egg production isn’t just about ethical considerations; it’s about ensuring safer, higher-quality food for all. With research showing that cage-free systems significantly lower food safety risks compared to traditional methods, the push for ethical sourcing isn’t just a trend—it’s a crucial step toward a more sustainable future. A growing number of consumers are also reducing or eliminating eggs from their diets as the most effective way to protect the welfare of hens.
