Chinese Retail Giant and 31 Food Businesses Transform Egg Supply Chain
Chinese Retail Giant and 31 Food Businesses Transform Egg Supply Chain

As a direct result of Lever China’s work, a key retailer and several restaurants are adopting cage-free egg-sourcing policies, contributing to improvements in animal welfare and food systems practices in one of the world’s largest consumer markets.

Rainbow Digital Commercial Announces Cage-Free Commitment

Rainbow Digital Commercial, a state-owned retail company, has committed to selling exclusively cage-free eggs across its 116 supermarket locations throughout mainland China. As the largest Chinese supermarket chain to make such a commitment, this decision will shift an estimated 550,000 hens annually from cage systems to alternative housing conditions.

Local Restaurants and Bakeries Adopt Cage-Free Policies

The transition extends beyond major retailers—31 independent bakery and restaurant companies have pledged to source only cage-free eggs. Through Lever China’s dedicated engagement, Beijing establishments, including Puzzles, Slow Food Community, and Fufu福福, have joined the initiative. Regional establishments from Chengdu and the Greater Bay Area, such as Also Like Bread, Wheat & Baker, and THE SENSE, are implementing cage-free policies. National brands with multiple locations, including La Saison and Chase Light, are adapting their sourcing practices.

A pivotal moment in this transformation occurred at the prestigious Chengdu Bakery Festival, where all sixty participating bakery brands used cage-free eggs exclusively—a direct result of Lever’s strategic engagement with event organizers. Collectively, these commitments will transition approximately 25,000 hens annually from caged systems, with several brands already completing their transition.
