Royal Supermarket, Macau’s leading grocery chain, has taken a groundbreaking step in the region’s retail sector by committing to a 100% cage-free egg policy by 2035. This commitment by the largest grocery chain in Macau–with 40 stores serving thousands daily–sets a new benchmark for responsible sourcing in the sector.

Jeff Chang, the General Manager of Royal Supermarket, emphasized the company’s recognition of animal welfare and food safety as a top priority. With Lever’s support, the group is actively working with suppliers and distributors to ensure a consistent supply of cage-free eggs, reflecting their commitment to offering high-quality products and addressing global concerns. This will benefit the local market and support the industry’s shift toward greater sustainability.

This decision benefits egg-laying hens by promoting humane treatment and sets a powerful example for responsible sourcing within the industry. Royal Supermarket’s move demonstrates a commitment to high-quality products and responsiveness to global concerns about animal welfare. This initiative sets an excellent example for the industry, showing that supermarkets, as primary channels for essential daily goods, can benefit consumers and the community through responsible procurement. Looking ahead, Lever Foundation will continue to support Royal Supermarket in its efforts to improve sourcing practices across its supply chain.
