If systemic change is based on numbers, then the Philippines hospitality industry is on track to create a groundbreaking paradigm shift in animal welfare and sustainable sourcing.
The 2023 Philippines Hospitality Industry Cage-Free Egg Scorecard showcases the remarkable commitment of over 75% of the country’s leading hotel groups to use only cage-free eggs. This momentous shift, fueled by Lever’s impactful initiatives, sets the stage for significant improvements for laying hens.
The journey towards this shift became a reality through the dedicated efforts of domestic and international hospitality brands operating in the Philippines. Over the past eighteen months, influential local groups like Ascott Philippines, Federal Land GT, SM Hotels and Convention Centers, Araneta Hotels, Robinsons Hotels & Resorts, Alphaland Corporation, Megaworld, Bellevue Hotels & Resorts, Shangri-La Philippines, and Newport World Resort have made decisive strides by setting specific timelines to shift to cage-free eggs. Additionally, City of Dreams, Okada Manila, Solaire Resort and Casino, and Balesin Island Club have gone beyond mere pledges, successfully transitioning to using only cage-free eggs. Lever’s strategic approach to engaging with each of these hotels has brought about unparalleled momentum for change.
It is also important to recognize the significance of international brands in this transformation, with major players such as Accor, Best Western Hotels, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Marriott, Millennium Hotels and Resorts, Radisson, The Peninsula, Wharf Hotels, and Wyndham having previously issued similar commitments within the Philippines. This milestone marks not just a change in sourcing practices but a collective shift towards a more compassionate approach to animal welfare and a stronger commitment to food safety and quality.
The impact of these policies on laying hens cannot be overstated. The move away from battery farms, where hens live confined in minuscule spaces and deprived of their natural behaviors, represents an important stride towards improved animal conditions.
As Lever Foundation continues to pave the way for a more compassionate and sustainable future, empowering the Philippine’s hospitality industry to end the use of caged eggs stands as a shining example of collective dedication to positive change.
