As a direct result of Lever China’s work, a key retailer and several restaurants are adopting cage-free egg-sourcing policies, contributing to improvements in animal welfare and food systems practices in one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
Rainbow Digital Commercial Announces Cage-Free Commitment
Rainbow Digital Commercial, a state-owned retail company, has committed to selling exclusively cage-free eggs across its 116 supermarket locations throughout mainland China. As the largest Chinese supermarket chain to make such a commitment, this decision will shift an estimated 550,000 hens annually from cage systems to alternative housing conditions.
Local Restaurants and Bakeries Adopt Cage-Free Policies
The transition extends beyond major retailers—31 independent bakery and restaurant companies have pledged to source only cage-free eggs. Through Lever China’s dedicated engagement:
- Beijing establishments, including Puzzles, Slow Food Community, and Fufu福福, have joined the initiative
- Regional establishments from Chengdu and the Greater Bay Area, such as Also Like Bread, Wheat & Baker, and THE SENSE, are implementing cage-free policies
- National brands with multiple locations, including La Saison and Chase Light, are adapting their sourcing practices
A pivotal moment in this transformation occurred at the prestigious Chengdu Bakery Festival, where all sixty participating bakery brands used cage-free eggs exclusively—a direct result of Lever’s strategic engagement with event organizers. Collectively, these commitments will transition approximately 25,000 hens annually from caged systems, with several brands already completing their transition.
Consumer Preferences Support the Transition
Research indicates growing consumer support for cage-free eggs:
- 75% of consumers prefer cage-free eggs, according to a joint survey by Lever China and FTA
- Consumers show willingness to pay premium prices for higher-quality, welfare-conscious products
- The trend reflects increasing interest in food source transparency and animal welfare
Current Progress and Future Outlook
These developments indicate ongoing changes in China’s food industry, where consumer preferences, business decisions, and animal welfare considerations are shaping purchasing practices. As more businesses implement cage-free policies, the impact on animal welfare and sustainable food practices continues to develop, influencing industry standards nationwide.
The success of these initiatives demonstrates that China’s food system is evolving to meet growing consumer demand for more ethical and sustainable food options. With major players like Rainbow Digital Commercial leading the way and smaller establishments rapidly following suit, the future of cage-free egg production in China looks increasingly promising. Additionally, an increasing number of consumers are choosing to leave eggs off their plates altogether as the most effective way to protect the welfare of hens.
